The operation, named Operation Chipmunk, was set up in May in a bid to tackle antisocial issues in the area, as well as driving offences such as speeding and driving with no insurance.

Operation Chipmunk originally began on Monday 22nd May in response to complaints from the local community.

Since then, officers have organised several days of action resulting in numerous arrests and other action, including antisocial behaviour warnings.

To date, arrests have been made in connection with offences including shoplifting, burglary and driving with no insurance. Fixed penalty notices have been handed out to those not wearing seatbelts and antisocial behaviour warnings have been handed out to a number of youths. In addition to this, Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit has seized seven vehicles for being used with no insurance or MOT.

PC Mike Pilbeam, who coordinated Monday’s activity, said: “The operation was all about education and promoting road safety, with enforcement where absolutely necessary.

“Thursday’s day of action was successful in tackling some of the issues that had been brought to our attention. I would like to thank those in the community who brought these issues to our attention and also our partner agencies for their invaluable assistance.”
